Learning to Read

Reading at Great Chesterford Primary Academy

At our school, we are determined that every pupil will learn to read, regardless of their background, needs and abilities. All pupils, including the weakest readers, make good progress and the majority will meet or exceed age-related expectations.

Reading, including the teaching of systematic synthetic phonics, is taught from the beginning of Reception. In the Early Years, regular phonics assessments enable us to identify any pupil who is falling behind and targeted support is then given. This support continues into Key Stage 2 when necessary.

We are committed to providing the best opportunity for all our pupils to become fluent, confident, passionate readers.

We use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised approach to teaching early reading skills.
